One of my favorite professors in grad school–it was actually reading one of her books that made me want to attend the school where she was teaching–was Annie Rogers. She did a lot of research on girls, especially during the late childhood and going into adolescence years. She’s also a word-lover and poet and she unearthed old old definitions of the word “courage” and came up with the term “ordinary courage” to coin what she was looking for in her research. Ordinary courage, she said, is “to speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart.” Isn’t that lovely? Ahhhhhhhh. Love that.
