Creative professionals of all kinds, from architects to writers, don’t do JOBS.

Well, not if they’re smart.

Creatives aren’t cut out to work for companies. As a client said today,  and I loosely quote, "companies suck the life out of you!"

Companies are about rules, policies, procedures, mass production.  Very few corporations with the notable exception of Google, Apple, and others provide the RIGHT ENVIRONMENT for creatives.

Artistic types, need to be able to, in fact MUST express their creative urges, in and through their work. For creatives their is no boundary between them and work.

They ARE their work.

And, they need environments that NURTURE, GUIDE, that expression NOT stifle it.

So, if you are a creative professional, don’t language it as a "Job Search". It’s NOT!

It’s a search for a way, a place, where you can DO YOUR WORK.

The other day, I was
listening to a ‘self help’ program on the radio as I was driving. Jack
Canfield, co-author of the “Chicken Soup’ books, was being interviewed. And, once
again I heard that word that I word
used to describe the books. The word: Inspirational.

I get irritated when
people market their books and programs using the word Inspirational. Why? Maybe
it’s me but the feeling I get when I hear these advertisements is that being Inspiring
is enough.

It’s not! Quite simply,
in 30 plus years of working with people, I’ve found that most people are unable
to translate Inspiration into ACTION.
At the very least, what people/you need in addition to Inspiration is:

Strategies/Plans – You may need a path, a set of steps, sometimes a detailed recipe
that will show you the way to get from where you are to where you want to be.

Education/Advice – You may need to acquire new skills in order to navigate your chosen
path.

Support
– You may need someone to ‘hold your hand’, kick you in the butt, or to help
you get you unstuck.

I’ve noticed that a lot
of Motivational Speakers and Authors just do that: speak and write. They don’t help
you make practical plans. They don’t give you the training you need. And, they
don’t provide the support you need.

That’s why you need to
hire a coach.

As a coach I’ve been
told by many that I’m very Inspiring
and I’m delighted to do what I can to help Inspire my clients and motivate them.
But, I’m more interested in helping my clients with practical strategies, providing
proven advice drawn from 37 years of business and life experience, and giving
the on demand support my clients need.

Which do you think will
get you where you want to be? Inspiration? Or, Coaching?

Have you ever felt
scattered?

You know the feeling.
You start working on one project only to find yourself thinking about another –
or about half a dozen other things.

How can you get
focused? Here are a few ideas.

Breath

Ideas exist in our
heads and minds. That’s why they can spin and zip around so easily causing us
to feel in a whirl. Close your eyes and take a couple of deep breaths. Breathing
puts us in touch with the realities of our bodies. It calms the mind and brain.
And, it helps us refocus on what we’re doing.

Do it

Often the distracting
thought is about small things we need to remember to do. Sometimes the best
thing to do to get rid of a distracting thought is to simply do it. My rule is that doing it must take less
than 3 minutes. Focusing on the distraction for longer than that can really
destroy our focus on what we were doing. So, if it’s going to take you away
longer just make a note of what you have to do.

Write

When my head’s all in a
whirl and my thoughts are spinning around and clanging like marbles in a
blender, I grab my keyboard and just write. Write till all the ‘stuff’ is out
of me head. Then I can look at what’s on paper and decide what important and
what’s not.

What’s helped you get
focused? Please add your comments at my blog.

Whenever you try to get
in touch with what you really, really want, you draw a blank. What can you do?

EnglandA young woman I
recently coached had this very problem. So, I asked her what DID interest her
and what WAS appealing. She replied that she enjoyed photography (but had been
put off it by a photography course she took) and had just purchased a new
digital camera. So, my homework assignment to her was to roam the Midlands (she
lives in England) taking photos.

You can use the same
approach. What creative acts DO you enjoy or have you enjoyed? Or, what
creative act would you like to try? Pick one and DO it.
The idea is to actually EXPRESS your . When your creative flows, you
begin to get clarity, and feel less lost.

What do you think of
this approach? What works for you when you feel lost? Add your comments at my
blog.

My client are all bright, seasoned, multi-talented, and often eclectic, professionals.

And, as Martha Stewart is oft quoted as saying, "that’s a good thing!"

And, like so many ‘good things’ it has a down side.

Here’s the conundrum.

When people go looking for help they tend to want a specialist.

For example, we bought a new stove for our house and needed a range hood and fan installed. So, I asked the fellow who had installed our dishwasher if he could do the job (cause he did really, really excellent work). He said no but gave me a referral to Marty "The Vent Guy". Marty came and did an absolutely marvelous job. He was easy to deal with, clearly knew what he was doing, consulted with me during the installation to discuss possible problems and solutions, and (my wife loved this) cleaned up after himself!

Being the curious sort I asked him what else he does. His response, "Well. I install bathroom fans." Seriously, all this guy does is install vent fans! And, he’s really, really, really good at it. Talk about specializing.

And, specializing is a good thing Martha.

BUT, it too has its downside.

When it comes to things like vents, you want a specialist.

But, when it comes to more complex challenges, say like "what you want to be when you grow up" or "what do I do about my money problems" you want help from someone with a broad range of experience, talent, and knowledge — in other words a generalist.

Now here’s the problem faced by guys like me and by my seasoned, eclectic clients.

We have to promote ourselves as if we are SPECIALISTS, but our power and the results we can acheive for our clients comes from the fact that we are GENERALISTS.

How do we do that?

By creating a speciality.

For example, it took me years to conceive my specialty was helping creative, eclectic, multi-talented, independent professionals get unstuck! So, I coined a term for what I do.

I’m The Unsticking Coach(TM)!

That label encompasses my eclecticism, my extensive expertise as a generalist, and yet sounds like one speciality!

So, is there a way to make your eclectic abilities seem like a specialty?

It’s been a rainy "Spring" here in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies.

We’re just rearranging the flower gardens in our back yard, making room for a new garden shed. The rain is a blessing — it  means I don’t have to water them.

But, in a couple of months, if we have our usual hot, dry prairie Summer, I’ll be out every few days watering the plants. If don’t they”ll wither and die!

How come I know that about plants BUT I forget that principle when it comes to my Creative Garden?

I’m reading Julia Cameron’s latest masterpiece, "Finding Water". I was struck by this quote from Abraham Maslow, "A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be at peace with himself. What a man can be, he must be."

Yet, when pressed for time what do I give up? My writing!

And, I see that in my friends who are writers and eclectic creatives.

And, then they get SICK. They WITHER.

If I am to flourish I must DO my ART!

I must water my Creative Garden.

One way to do that is Blogging.

What will you do to Water Your Garden?

In this issue of Creative Careers Unleashed, the newsletter: Thoughts on defeating the gremlins that interfere with your ability to express yourself, particularly in writing.

DEFEATING THE GREMLINS

Have you ever been stuck for the right word? Worse yet, have you
ever needed to write something vital to promoting your ideas or
your business - a special report, a newsletter, a piece of
marketing copy, or a book chapter - and been totally, completely,
STUCK? So, stuck you found creative ways to avoid writing - like
rearranging your sock drawer, filing business cards, or reading
sp*m mail!

You’re not alone. A couple of my most recent coaching sessions
focused on this issue. Since all of us need to express our ideas in
writing I thought it might be useful to look at some strategies for
defeating the gremlins that inhibit your freedom of written
expression (they also work for other forms of expression).

First, let’s examine the origins and nature of Gremlins . . .

DEFEATING THE GREMLINS

We can express our ideas in several forms - visually, orally,
musically, and through the written word - and Gremlins can show up
to inhibit any and all of these forms of expression. But, I’m going
to focus on the act of writing because so much of our expression of
ideas, thoughts, and feelings still occurs in writing.

What are Gremlins?

Gremlin is the name I use to characterize a particular set of
challenges and problems. Gremlins are creatures of thought. Though
formless they can exert great power and influence and stop you
cold!

Where do Gremlins come from?

Gremlins live and hide in the dark, deep, corners of your mind.
Seriously. In 17 years of coaching, I’ve found that most of the
problems my clients had with expressing themselves had little to do
with their actual ability. That is, the problem wasn’t that they
didn’t know how to write or weren’t familiar with the basics of
grammar and composition. It was that they COULDN’T write - when
they most needed to. They were STUCK, FROZEN. Yep! The problem was
"all in their head" - and, maybe in yours too.

Where do they come from?

Gremlins are thought patterns which are often formed and installed
by powerful or high impact experiences we’ve had - often negative
ones. For example, a ‘mantra’ constantly repeated by a parent, such
as "Don’t say anything that would embarrass us in front of the
neighbours!" Sometimes a single powerful, negative experience can
create a Gremlin. For example, my step-mom once said something to
me that hurt so deeply I simply stuffed my feelings - for many
years (a little extreme no?)

How do you know when the problem is caused by a Gremlin and when
it’s a real problem?

Let’s face it we do have ‘real’ problems that get in the way of
expressing ourselves how and when we want to. These include: not
enough time, too many things to do, lack of energy (physical,
emotional, and/or psychic), and physical limitations like pain and
other health challenges.

One question I sometimes ask my clients who are struggling is, "If
you were forced to do this could you? That is, is the problem that
you don’t know how to do ‘it’ or is something else holding you
back?" The actual wording I sometimes use is, "If I put a gun to
your head would you know how?" If the answer is YES, then the
problem is Gremlin related.

Can you give me some examples of Gremlins in action?

I’m happy to. Here’s a few:

- Every time you sit down to write that chapter that’s long overdue
to your editor you feel an overwhelming sense of anxiety. So, you
do anything to avoid writing - or even sitting down to write.

- You start to write and keep editing and rewriting the same few
paragraphs over and over again. I call this Gremlin "The Inner
Editor". It shows up in professionals, like me, who have a tendency
toward being Perfectionists.

- You have a newsletter due but can’t think of a topic. However, as
you examine things you realize that the ‘real issue’ is you have
lots of ideas but none of them are ‘important enough’ to be shared
with your readers. After all, your readers expect only important,
‘big’ ideas from you - not mundane, ordinary stuff.

- You struggle and struggle and struggle with the wording of a
piece of marketing communication. As you reflect on it, you realize
you fear saying anything that’s "too pushy", or too "salesy", or
"inauthentic", or that would make you look foolish.

DEFEATING THE GREMLINS

I have a compulsion to express myself - often in writing. And, I’ve
battled my own share of Gremlins (some even while writing this
article).

Here’s a few of the techniques for Defeating the Gremlins that have
worked for me and my clients.

1. Identify Whether It’s Real or It’s a Gremlin

Remember what I said, "you have real problems". Real problems
require different solutions than do Gremlins. One way to identify
if it’s a Gremlin challenge is to simply ask yourself, "Do I know
how to do this?" If the honest answer is NO, then you have a skill
deficiency. Get some training. Get some skill coaching (my coaching
doesn’t just focus on Gremlins). Find a book. Search the Web. Ask a
friend. Get the help you need.

If, on the other hand, you’ve done this before and you DO know how
. . . well you have a Gremlin on your hands. And, knowing that IS
important. Because following are a few Gremlin defeating tactics
you can use.

2. Dealing With The Inner Editor Gremlin

As a Recovering Perfectionist I have a ‘need’ to make sure
everything I produce is . . . er, well perfect. So, I can get lost
in endlessly rewriting the opening paragraphs of a piece of work.
Here are some ways I deal with The Inner Editor.

a) I learned this technique years ago on a business writing
workshop (Thanks Andrew Vujonvich). When I find myself in the
endless rewrite loop I simply repeat this mantra: "First get it
down. Then get it good!" Sounds corny but it works like a darn. It
helps to kick me out of that perfection loop.

b) Set a limit. I used to edit my newsletter 5 or 6 times. I set a
limit of two overall edits and out it goes. I know there may be
typo’s and grammar glitches but I’d rather get a product out the
door than not. And, I hope my readers will find the content useful
and forgive the occasional oops. Moreover, I’ve found that even
after multiple edits there can still be typos and other errors -
more edits does NOT guarantee perfection.

c) Sometimes the Inner Editor shows up as a critical voice: "Who do
you think you’re fooling." "Nobody will read this dreck." And, oh
so many other negative observations. Listen carefully and you may
find it sounds like one of your parents - particularly if you had a
critical parent. The challenge here is that the ‘advice’ the Inner
Editor is ’sharing’ may have originally useful - but now it’s not.
It’s freezing you up. What I do is say, "Thanks for the advice. Now
F**k off!" Sometimes, I have to say something like that (you don’t
have to be as profane as me) several times. Sometimes I do the
virtual equivalent of plugging my ears and saying, "la, la, la, la,
I don’t hear you!" I know it’s silly but it works!

DEFEATING THE GREMLINS

3. Overcoming The Anxiety/Fear/Dread Gremlin

You sit down to write. You feel overwhelmed with negative emotions
like anxiety, dread, panic, or plain old fear.

What can you do?

Here are some ideas:

a) Take a deep breath. Take another one. And, another. And,
another. This will help drain the tension away - and alleviate the
yucky feeling in your guts that’s distracting you.

b) Just write for 10 minutes. Even if you think that what you are
writing is crap. Once you get into the act of writing you may just
find the negativity draining away. Oh, and that stuff you wrote -
maybe it ain’t gold but it may not be garbage either.

c) Consider working with an Energy Therapist. My colleague Joan
Hitlin is developing a whole suite of tools for defeating negative
emotions (and Gremlins) that she calls MojoMorphosis. You can find
Joan here.

Would you like more ideas on Defeating Your Gremlins?

Then check out this Blog.

I’ll be posting more tips over the next week. And, please don’t be
shy. Feel free to comment on my post and share some of your own
Gremlins and how you defeated them.
