Why can’t anyone, woman or man, DO BOTH at the same time.

When I teach my patented networking approach, I  make the point early on in my workshops, that networking can have many purposes:

1. To find contacts,
2. To find information,
3. To inform others of your availability for work,
4. To To meet new people,
5. etc.

Who says you need to do JUST one thing? Where is this written down? Inm

Ih my patented networking workshops, I teach clients that the most important thing in networking is knowing WHY you are doing it; creating a plan that supports that goal, and then acting authentically and in a rea l fashion as you network AND promote yourself.

Personally, I’m going to relax, sleep, and take it easy. And, if it so happens that I meet someone ‘famous’ or eager to be a client — well, cool but Tis the Season to relax not work!

Thusly inspired, I say:

1. Networking is about RELATIONSHIPS.

Yes, it’s about KNOWING the other person. Relationships GROW over time. Sure you can walk up to a gal at a party and say, "Wanna link with me?" But, is that likely to happen? NO!

Relationships take time. And, involve at least 2 people. I need to know you BEFORE we get intimate — well, that’s ME… anyways…. maybe NOT you.

2. Networking is about CONNECTING

I want to feel a connection with you. Do we grok the same things? Do we share at least some similar values — and beliefs?

Connecting is about relationships, AGAIN. That is, do we RELATE? Are we sympatico?

3. Networking is about GIVE then TAKE.

No. It’s not TAKE, TAKE, TAKE, then maybe GIVE.

You want something from me. I have worked hard to build a reputation — good or bad I’ve worked it. So, you want something from me…. be prepared to give. And, give before you ask to get.

It’s long been a tenet of success that it’s not what you know but WHO you know, that is the REAL KEY to success. And, for me, networking is the way to power up who you know.
