I’ve been blocked in my writing for a bit now.

Okay, weeks!

I’ve been working with the marvelous Debora Seidman of Writing The Prayer of Your Life. And, today we had a fun session that I want to share with you.

Essentially, I have two parts of me that are in conflict.

When I told Debora that it was like the clash of The Titans (think Greek myths), she suggested I create a play with these two characters.

So, I made up this play. What was fun is I got to be the Director and the playwright. And, then as the play unfolded I got to be a character in the play.

What was really freeing was when I got stuck Debora kept saying, “it’s a rehersal! You can do anything!”

WOW! That lead to cool events and major ahas.

It was fun Playing with words… and characters. I can’t wait to see what happens in the play!!

I am smitten with the writings of Julia Cameron. I have FIVE of her books!

And, I believe in the power of Morning Pages, Julia’s wonderful invention for creating a spiritual awakening in writers.

BUT, but, I don’t do them RIGHT!

Julia wants me to write longhand.

Sheesh if I did that I couldn’t read them. So, sorry Julia I TYPE them.

Julia also says write 3 pages. Again, I divert from the true way.

I write not by volume but by length of time. I write for 1/2 an hour. I type as fast as I can, though.

Sin #3! I don’t write Morning Pages most weekends as I’m rarely at the computer.

Finally, I when I’m really inspired with an idea I will write a piece first and then do Morning Pages later — like in the afternoon.

Julia please forgive me.

I delivered my Creative Unsticking(TM) workshop yesterday to the Calgary chapter of the Professional Writers Association of Canada.

Thanks to all who attended for your participation and provocative questions.

I want to focus on an "block" that was raised by one of the attendees because I believe it exemplifies a common struggle for writers and other creatives.

Here’s the situation. This attendee wanted to write a book but was stalled (blocked) by naysayers.

The same thing has likely happened to you. You were inspired to write an article or book chapter or a poem or a play or pen a piece of music or craft a sculpture or paint a picture or snap some photos.

So, what is the first thing you’re tempted to do after engaging in your creative act? Or, sometimes even before we create something we’re tempted to say something like, "I’m thinking of writing a book about [fill in the blank]".

Our first temptation is to show it someone else — and ask for their feedback.

And, that could be a BIG mistake.

First, why are we tempted to show our work to others. Well naturally we’re proud of ‘our baby’. And, like a new parent we want to show off our creation to others. It’s a very human thing to do.

But, the flip side of that ‘pride’ of creation is really the need for the approval of others. We have this need, in part, because except for procreation, creation is a solitary act. We put our soul and heart into crafting our work but we secretly wonder "is this any good?" So we ask others.

But, for writers and other creatives there’s a real risk in asking for feedback.

When we ask for feedback there are three possible responses: people could like (love) our work; people could dislike (hate) our work; or people could be neutral.

And, the problem for us as humans is that we have a very strong tendency to pay more attention to negative or neutral responses than to positive accolades.

And, by focusing on the negative we get stuck, stalled, blocked.

We don’t publish our work — we don’t put it out into the world.

There’s another risk in asking for feedback. By asking for another’s feedback we are intrinsically giving them the power to say what’s good or what’s bad about our work. In effect, we are saying "I don’t know the value of my work so YOU tell me!"

Another important thing to remember about feedback is that is merely someone else’s opinion! It is what they feel and think. Nothing more.

So, next time you’re tempted to ask for feedback remember the old maxim, "Be careful what you ask for, you might get it!"

The answer lies in
moving into your Creative Expression.

One very useful
exercise is Julia Cameron’s Morning Pages. Simply sit your bum in a chair and
write. Now, Julia insists that you hand write 3 pages. But, my hand writing is
just plain awful, so I type my Morning Pages. And, instead of going for 3 pages
I write what I can in 30 minutes. The rules of Morning Pages are simple. Write.
Write whatever comes into your head. Whine. Snivel. Rant. Whatever, just write.
The act of writing primes your Creative Self.

In this issue of Creative Careers Unleashed, the newsletter: Thoughts on defeating the gremlins that interfere with your ability to express yourself, particularly in writing.

CREATIVE CAREERS UNLEASHED!
From Lyle T. Lachmuth

Want to subscribe? You’ll find links to do that at
the very end of this newsletter.

DEFEATING THE GREMLINS

Have you ever been stuck for the right word? Worse yet, have you
ever needed to write something vital to promoting your ideas or
your business – a special report, a newsletter, a piece of
marketing copy, or a book chapter – and been totally, completely,
STUCK? So, stuck you found creative ways to avoid writing – like
rearranging your sock drawer, filing business cards, or reading
sp*m mail!

You’re not alone. A couple of my most recent coaching sessions
focused on this issue. Since all of us need to express our ideas in
writing I thought it might be useful to look at some strategies for
defeating the gremlins that inhibit your freedom of written
expression (they also work for other forms of expression).

First, let’s examine the origins and nature of Gremlins . . .

===========================================================

We can express our ideas in several forms - visually, orally,
musically, and through the written word - and Gremlins can show up
to inhibit any and all of these forms of expression. But, I\'m going
to focus on the act of writing because so much of our expression of
ideas, thoughts, and feelings still occurs in writing.

What are Gremlins?

Gremlin is the name I use to characterize a particular set of
challenges and problems. Gremlins are creatures of thought. Though
formless they can exert great power and influence and stop you
cold!

Where do Gremlins come from?

Gremlins live and hide in the dark, deep, corners of your mind.
Seriously. In 17 years of coaching, I\'ve found that most of the
problems my clients had with expressing themselves had little to do
with their actual ability. That is, the problem wasn\'t that they
didn\'t know how to write or weren\'t familiar with the basics of
grammar and composition. It was that they COULDN\'T write - when
they most needed to. They were STUCK, FROZEN. Yep! The problem was
"all in their head" - and, maybe in yours too.

Where do they come from?

Gremlins are thought patterns which are often formed and installed
by powerful or high impact experiences we\'ve had - often negative
ones. For example, a \'mantra\' constantly repeated by a parent, such
as "Don\'t say anything that would embarrass us in front of the
neighbours!" Sometimes a single powerful, negative experience can
create a Gremlin. For example, my step-mom once said something to
me that hurt so deeply I simply stuffed my feelings - for many
years (a little extreme no?)

How do you know when the problem is caused by a Gremlin and when
it\'s a real problem?

Let\'s face it we do have \'real\' problems that get in the way of
",1]

Let’s face it we do have ‘real’ problems that get in the way of
<!--
D(["mb","expressing ourselves how and when we want to. These include: not
enough time, too many things to do, lack of energy (physical,
emotional, and/or psychic), and physical limitations like pain and
other health challenges.

One question I sometimes ask my clients who are struggling is, "If
you were forced to do this could you? That is, is the problem that
you don\'t know how to do \'it\' or is something else holding you
back?" The actual wording I sometimes use is, "If I put a gun to
your head would you know how?" If the answer is YES, then the
problem is Gremlin related.

Can you give me some examples of Gremlins in action?

I\'m happy to. Here\'s a few:

- Every time you sit down to write that chapter that\'s long overdue
to your editor you feel an overwhelming sense of anxiety. So, you
do anything to avoid writing - or even sitting down to write.

- You start to write and keep editing and rewriting the same few
paragraphs over and over again. I call this Gremlin "The Inner
Editor". It shows up in professionals, like me, who have a tendency
toward being Perfectionists.

- You have a newsletter due but can\'t think of a topic. However, as
you examine things you realize that the \'real issue\' is you have
lots of ideas but none of them are \'important enough\' to be shared
with your readers. After all, your readers expect only important,
\'big\' ideas from you - not mundane, ordinary stuff.

- You struggle and struggle and struggle with the wording of a
piece of marketing communication. As you reflect on it, you realize
you fear saying anything that\'s "too pushy", or too "salesy", or
"inauthentic", or that would make you look foolish.

==========================================================
DEFEATING THE GREMLINS

I have a compulsion to express myself – often in writing. And, I’ve
<!--
D(["mb","battled my own share of Gremlins (some even while writing this
article).

Here\'s a few of the techniques for Defeating the Gremlins that have
worked for me and my clients.

1. Identify Whether It\'s Real or It\'s a Gremlin

Remember what I said, "you have real problems". Real problems
require different solutions than do Gremlins. One way to identify
if it\'s a Gremlin challenge is to simply ask yourself, "Do I know
how to do this?" If the honest answer is NO, then you have a skill
deficiency. Get some training. Get some skill coaching (my coaching
doesn\'t just focus on Gremlins). Find a book. Search the Web. Ask a
friend. Get the help you need.

If, on the other hand, you\'ve done this before and you DO know how
. . . well you have a Gremlin on your hands. And, knowing that IS
important. Because following are a few Gremlin defeating tactics
you can use.

2. Dealing With The Inner Editor Gremlin

As a Recovering Perfectionist I have a \'need\' to make sure
everything I produce is . . . er, well perfect. So, I can get lost
in endlessly rewriting the opening paragraphs of a piece of work.
Here are some ways I deal with The Inner Editor.

a) I learned this technique years ago on a business writing
workshop (Thanks Andrew Vujonvich). When I find myself in the
endless rewrite loop I simply repeat this mantra: "First get it
down. Then get it good!" Sounds corny but it works like a darn. It
helps to kick me out of that perfection loop.

b) Set a limit. I used to edit my newsletter 5 or 6 times. I set a
limit of two overall edits and out it goes. I know there may be
typo\'s and grammar glitches but I\'d rather get a product out the
door than not. And, I hope my readers will find the content useful
and forgive the occasional oops. Moreover, I\'ve found that even
after multiple edits there can still be typos and other errors -
",1]

3. Overcoming The Anxiety/Fear/Dread Gremlin

You sit down to write. You feel overwhelmed with negative emotions
like anxiety, dread, panic, or plain old fear.

What can you do?

Here are some ideas:

a) Take a deep breath. Take another one. And, another. And,
another. This will help drain the tension away - and alleviate the
yucky feeling in your guts that\'s distracting you.

b) Just write for 10 minutes. Even if you think that what you are
writing is crap. Once you get into the act of writing you may just
find the negativity draining away. Oh, and that stuff you wrote -
maybe it ain\'t gold but it may not be garbage either.

c) Consider working with an Energy Therapist. My colleague Joan
Hitlin is developing a whole suite of tools for defeating negative
emotions (and Gremlins) that she calls MojoMorphosis. You can find
Joan at <a onclick\u003d\"return top.js.OpenExtLink(window,event,this)\" href\u003d\"http://clicks.aweber.com/z/ct/?eYRA3sgII9azy3F67FFohw\" target\u003d_blank>http://clicks.aweber.com/z/ct/?eYRA3sgII9azy3F67FFohw

Few things suck more than having a burning need to write but being stuck about what to write!

It’s called Writers Block. Sounds about as serious as a stopped up drain. Or, blocked nasal passage.

But, its worse… far, far worse.

It’s constipation of the soul and spirit. And, it hurts like hell!

How do you get unblocked?

Well, recently I invested in a set of Fame Cards. Fame Cards are the brain child of Connie Frey, PhD, a writing coach, located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

FAME Cards are described as writing prompts for the right and left brain. There are 4 sets of 10 cards. The four sets of cards help stimulate imagination through Focus, Awareness, Momentum, and Expression.

So, a couple times lately when I was stuck about what to write, I shuffled the deck and pulled a card at random.

What strikes me as interesting is that both time I pulled the same card, from the Momentum suite. It said, "Inpire Yourself"

First time I pulled the card I decided it meant I needed to write a poem. So, I did.

This time, I decided to write about the experience

But, what if you’re stuck with writers block?

How will you inspire yourself?
